Review of Raging Bull (1980) by Horse C — 21 Feb 2013
This is probably the opposite of the Rocky movies. Where Rocky had a positive attitude, and was about redemption, Raging Bull is unashamedly negative, and was about the downfall of a champion. Rocky was set in the present, while Raging Bull set itself in the past.
Rocky was warm, while Raging Bull was often painful. Rocky Balboa was a man who wanted to make a name for himself, while Jack la Motta was always cruel, blunt, violent, and self-destructive. More importantly, Rocky was in colour, while Raging Bull, through the whole movie, was in black and white.
In a way, the monochrome style actually helps to show that it's not like Rocky in any way. The characters all emote powerfully, and the story stands out really well. However, I really think it's one of those things that's art over entertainment.
