Review of Raging Bull (1980) by Ash-Lord — 14 Oct 2013
Why did I wait so long to watch this film? Raging Bull is directed by the great Martin Scorsese, and tells the story of Jake LaMotta a boxer who's rage inside the ring starts to trickle outside as well, causing his life to slowly start to deteriorate. This film makes Rocky look like Ricky 1... okay that may have been an over exaggeration, but you get my point.
The acting in this film is top notch, Robert De Niro gives an amazing performance as does the rest of the cast. After all these years, De Niro has becoming an acting legend, so it can be hard at times to see the character he's portraying and not the actor, but here his turn is so good, that I forgot I was watching De Niro. The supporting cast is fine, especially Joe Pesci in his first role and Cathy Moriarty who seemed to fall off, despite earning an Oscar nomination for her role here. There are really no weak links in terms of acting here, everyone is spot on, which helped suck me into the film even more. Everyone does a great job and feels genuine.
The script is great, the dialogue feels real and genuine. The story is great, but it's based off of a true story, so of course it's great. The directing is great, never does the film lose sight of it's goal and every shot is perfectly put together. The cinematography is masterful, especially during the fight scenes and opening credits. The music is great, even if it isn't an original score. The fight scenes, while slightly dated, are great for it's time and have some truly brutal moments. This film is fantastic on a technical level.
This film is a very sad watch, so don't expect an upbeat Rocky ending. I can now see why this film is regarded as one of the best of all time. The story is great, the acting is fantastic, the directing is amazing, the cinematography is phenomenal, I can go on. I highly reccomend that if you haven't seen this film, to see it as soon as possible. It's a masterpiece that shouldn't be missed especially by film-lovers like yourselves. Bravo again, Mr. Scorsese.
Overall: Wonderful acting, technically brilliant, deserves all the praise it gets today.
Final Score: 10/10 CERTIFIED KICK-ASH!
