Review of Radio Flyer (1992) by Silver F — 08 Jan 2010
I've watched this movie since I was a kid myself. It deals with the pain of child abuse and the things that kids will do to escape a drunken madman that they're supposed to trust... This kind of plot is almost played out nowadays, but in '92, it was trying to put a gentle and fantastical spin on how to cope with it.
Many "official" critics have bagged the film because they're trying to look too deeply into it, they look for metaphors that are meaningful to them... Just like someone could misinterpret a silly nonsense word like "whomps" to be something slanderous, sexual, or even violent. I've read some of the hypothetical meanings for the scenes in the movie, and most seem concocted from Psych 101.
This movie should be taken at face value, its ending is simple, poignant, and wonderfully refreshing.
