Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Ryan M — 10 May 2010
Hatheway is brilliant as the ex drug addict who is no longer addicted to drugs but now needs to inform everyone of the hardship she has gone through portrayed perfectly by Hatheway who lets you see the Vulnarable side of Kim whilst still showing you she is still edgy.
The characters are layered and seem like real people with problems the audience can relate with. The emotion is dealt with well by choosing to go power of acting and deep sympath with each character rather than over sympathising one character and becoming soppy.
The directing is fantastic using a documentary style and handheld camera shots to help immerse the audience into the family problems and allowing them to make their own minds up on their views of the characters rather than forcing emotion through close-ups and reaction shots. The style is risky as it could have come across as ameteur like but it rather helps you feel part of the family, you see the wedding rehearsal through the family camera you feel the pent up anger and frustration being kept down by Kim (Anne Hatheway).
