Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Martin G — 04 Dec 2009
I watched this one expecting a family drama, and that much it is, however, it is primarily a film shot as an edited family home movie (sans grainy video quality) during a family reunion, wedding rehearsal & ultimately the wedding itself.
What was done right: Fine and sincere performances from everyone all around, the scenes and dialogue are perfectly believable and usually long enough that they almost feel like they're happening in real time.
Characters are complex well-rounded and fairly likable.
This movie accomplishes what it sets out to do, but the real challenge ends up being, "Why should anyone take their time to watch it?".
It has plenty of beauty, but it doesn't necessarily have anything too new or exciting to offer the viewer, especially if you're all too familiar with family drama.
It's a good enough movie, but it doesn't merit any repeated viewings afterward and neither would I recommend anyone to go out of their way to see it.
Themes include: sisterhood, drug abuse, loneliness, guilt, recovery & redemption.
