Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Jared M — 21 Dec 2009
Strong but uneven character drama from director Jonathan Demme based around an excellent, surprising performance by Anne Hathaway. It's overlong and drags in places - there are several extended sequences akin to watching the minutia of a wedding party full of people you don't know; it might be authentic, but it's not particularly compelling.
But there are also many strong moments of solid drama - and the handheld camerawork manages to give it all a sense of realism without getting to cumbersome. Maybe a bit overrated, but definitely worth watching.
