Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Camille K — 13 Feb 2010
The performances of Anne Hathaway, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Debra Winger are the only reasons to check out this film. Hathaway gives one of the best performances of her film career, so far. She rightfully got an Oscar nomination for it. DeWitt is great as Hathaway's sister. They have very good on screen chemistry together. It was great seeing Debra Winger on the big screen again in a powerful supporting role as Hathaway's mother.
The film reminded me of films like Pieces of April, Margot At the Wedding, Igby Goes Down. I am surprised that Jonathan Demme directed this film. I thought his other films like Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Manchurian Candidate remake, and Married to the Mob were much better than this film. The film doesn't have the Jonathan Demme feel to it.
Demme does too much handheld camera and abrupt cuts. Also some of the other castmembers, in my opinion, were miscast.
Still the film is worth checking out for Hathaway, DeWitt, and Winger's performances.
