Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Cheryl L — 21 May 2010
An interesting and somewhat awkward filming style makes it clear from the onset that this movie is somewhat unique. Hathaway probably delivers the performance of her career, with a very, very diverse ensemble cast adding to the movie's sense of absurdity (which is only strengthened by the weird wedding theme and all its accompaniments).
Long scenes of dialogue might bore some movie goers, but those with an appreciation for honest and intense drama will find a lot to like. Something did however feel out of place - while the long 'wedding related scenes' (which form a contrasting background to the protagonist and her family's dark and broken past) do add to the sense of realism, one does get the feeling some of these scenes could have been shortened.
Some authentic and intense encounters between family members serves as the movies greatest triumph, with a very open and unapologetic ending leaving everything in the air. Frustratingly real and daring film making.
