Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Nathaniel G — 16 Nov 2011
Heart-wrenching drama from Jonathan Demme, who uses intimate focus through close-up camerawork to examine the lives of a family living with tragedy and heartbreak on the weekend of Rachel getting married. Anne Hathaway gives an Oscar-worthy (and nominated) performance as Kym, Rachel's (Rosemarie DeWitt) sister, a former model who has spent years in rehab for various drug addictions. She bears the grief of her family and her inner demons as she comes home for the first time in a long time and the family secrets and problems resurface with her.
The acting ensemble is terrific. Every performance is well done and script only adds to the intimacy and magic of the film. While at times, the movie can be uncomfortable because of how the family interacts, several scenes are incredibly meaningful and heartbreaking at the same time.
Terrific story of a family coming together (or not), but a true examination of love, no matter who or what.
