This would could be categorized under the "Raw Filmmaking" genre along with films like "Pieces of April". The film style is raw, the characters are brutally raw and the storyline was so plausible it almost didn't feel like a movie, more like a documentary.
Hathaway, I know has done other "adult" movies (which I haven't seen) but if those didn't shake off the Disney pigeon-hole this one does it spades.
