Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Andy O — 24 Dec 2009
Sometimes you can just come across a great movie by accident, I ended up watching Rachel Getting Married as I've just been given a 3 month trial to Lovefilm and I needed to fill my list.
Jonathan Demme is a excellent Director one only has to look at his list of previous films on IMDB to know that your in for a treat.
Rachel Getting Married is a very clever film probably a little to clever for its target audience but it blends the dark and light elements in Anne Hathaway's characters life with the ultimate dysfunction of the family unit.
Essentially the point of this film is that it doesn't matter what is going on sometimes the main story isn't the one concerning the person in the limelight.
Anne Hathaway is simply mind blowing as the troubled Liv, I can hardly believe it is the same actress I first saw in the sugary Princess Diaries and later in the Devil Wares Prada.
Her performance in this film proves that she has a future once she grows tired of sugary sweet roles and also that she is a very fine actress with a full emotional range.
Another thing I noticed about this movie was concerning the way it was shot, cinematographically it feels very indie and one gets almost a fly on the wall view of the wedding, this adds an extra element to a plot that could have easily turned into a forgettable Chic flick weepy or a depressive 'Sherrybaby esqe' film.
The only thing I can really fine fault with is the ending, it just felt to me a little rushed and not very well thought through containing things that could have easily been omitted.
That said I feel I am being a tad picky, Rachel Getting Married is a excellent film that asks questions about the family unit and about whether a person can truly move on as well as forgive herself.
