If you don't recognize your own family, or a family you're close with when you watch this film, consider yourself lucky. I really wanted to like this film but for all the great performances (Hathaway, Winger and DeWitt) it finds ways to reject YOU; to keep you from liking it.
Kind of like Kim (Hathaway) herself. The characters and the family are who they are; they don't care if you like them or feel for them, in fact, they probably don't want your sympathy. They have their grief, their foibles, their issues, their addictions and in the end you can leave.
They will be dealing with their issues long after you're gone. You can leave your gift on the table.
