Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Deepak M — 30 Jan 2010
Featuring an Oscar nominated performance by Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married is a family drama that happens during the buildup to a wedding. The wedding itself has an Indian theme (the bride and bridesmaids wear saris, the groom wears a sherwani and a marigold garland, the indigo colored wedding cake has a decorated elephant on top, people are shown eating saag paneer) but no Indian cast.
Like Monsoon Wedding (was the wedding theme inspired by MW?), this movie has been shot home-video style, with the camera rapidly moving from one actor to another while capturing conversations. Hathaway delivers a brilliant portrayal of a wayward girl struggling to find acceptance in a family where some are unable to forgive her past.
The ambience of a Connecticut home just before autumn, Hathaway's performance, and an able supporting cast, made this an unforgettable movie.
