Review of Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) by Ashleigh W — 02 Aug 2007

One of the few films I have seen, that have actually made me cry. Set in the early 20th century in Australia, it tells the tale of 3 young girls, half-European half-Aborigine, who are taken away from their mother due to Australia's version of the residential school program and forced to live in oppressive camps.

They eventually escape and try to follow the rabbit proof fences (constructed to control Australia's out-of-control rabbit population)back to their mother. Sounds sappy, and perhaps it is, but it is stirring critique of Canadian and Australian treatment of aboriginals/aborigines.
