Review of Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) by Will P — 06 Sep 2008
I thought this was a very interesting movie. I was about the struggle that three women had to endure, when they where little girls. It was based in the outback of Australia, where Molly, Gracie and Daisy lived with mother. They where half breeds, this was half aborigine and half white. At this time Australia?s government wanted to demolish, what they called these half breeds, the third race. The government would take these children from there parents and send them to concentration camps and the really light ones would get integrated into white society. When captured and taken to a concentration camp Molly the oldest decided to lead her two younger siblings back home. Dodging trackers and the police from capturing them, these little girls ran 1200 miles and for 9 weeks. Despite all Molly?s efforts one of them did get caught, Daisy, she fell for the trickery of one of the governments spies. He convinced her that her mother was in a town not far from where they were, and that all she had to do was catch the train there. After Daisy?s capture, Molly and Gracie went on with there journey guided by the spirit bird and the fence that lead them to there home. In the end they were reunited with there mother and they all went into hiding in the desert.
This movie relates to my World religions class because it show some of the core features of Indigenous Religions. It showed examples of Practical, Polytheistic, and some indigenous rituals. One example of practical was in the beginning of the movie when Molly and her family went hunting and killed a lizard to eat for dinner. One example of Polytheistic is the spirit bird and how it provided guidance and watched over the skies. This spirit helps guide the little girls back home. One example of indigenous ritual was when the Mother and her elders were chanting and praying at the end of the movie that the little girls would make it back home safely.
