Review of Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) by Sharyn H — 23 Aug 2009
Heartbreakingly beautiful movie... this one really stole my heart, no pun intended. The sheer strength of purpose and character that gets these girls home from the settlement is astounding - especially Molly, whom we learn (in the description at the end) walked the rabbit-proof fence not once, but twice... I found myself feeling very protective of the girls, and was mentally egging them along the path home.
I also appreciate that they've attempted to portray all the characters as realistically as possible - even Branagh's "Devil"/Neville, is portrayed as a man who is certainly doing the wrong thing in having the children removed from their mothers, though who isn't being malicious about it - he truly thinks that he's doing the right thing for these children. He isn't a hateable character, and I actually respect that about him, even if I don't 'like' him.
