Review of Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) by Frances H — 27 Jan 2013
What a hymn to the human spirit this remarkable film is! As in Sophie's Choice, the scene of the children being ripped from their mother's arms was terribly heart-wrenching. That Molly made this incredible journey, not once, but twice and ended up losing one of her own children is even more so.
The cruelty of the human race never ceases to amaze me. But not only the aboriginal children were so inhumanely treated by the British and Australian governments. This film should be seen in conjunction with Oranges and Sunshine, where the British and Australian governments are just as cruel to British children (about 130,000 of them) decades later, who were mass-deported and worked as slave labor, while suffering physical sexual abuse.
If they do such to their own, why not the aborigines?
