Review of Raavanan (2010) by Ajayesh S — 19 Jun 2010
This is truly the most demented, deviant and twisted version of Ramayan that I've ever seen. Mani Rathnam wanted to eulogize Maoist guirellas without p**ssing of the establishment and so he used the backdrop of an epic tale (the Ramayan) to do so.
Only this version of the epic tale comes of as the vanity project of a demented film-maker out to relive the days of Roja. The visuals are fantastic and maniacal at times. Abhishek, Govinda and Aishwarya are superb and give rockstar performances but the entire endeavor is a wasted fallacy.
The story is a psychological mess with a legend at its core and the script leaves you uncomfortable with the liberties taken with the epic, just to eulogize the maoist agenda. The tale is too one-sided to swallow without any dose of realism.
