Review of Quiz Show (1994) by Dan S — 12 Sep 2011
Wow. I rented this film over the weekend and I was amazed. I get so used to seeing films with such huge effects and over the top acting, but this film was on point. Redford guides what in my opinion was a B-level cast to A-level acting.
This is the best I've seen John Turturro and Ralph Fiennes, both of whom I have little faith in as actors. The directing was masterfully done by Redford, which shocks me since I didn't enjoy what he did with Ordinary People.
The run time, although long, which is a pet peeve of mine, seemed to fly by. This truly deserved the accolades it recieved in 1994. As someone who is always looking to learn more about the entertainment industry, this is a true way to see its roots.
The emergence of television as something that would become a cornerstone in society is something amazing to see captured in such a romantically done film. Excellent all around job by the cast, excellent directing, sets that didn't overwhelm the viewer, and a story that is as relevant today as it was back then make this movie something that isn't recommended, but essential.
