Review of Quintet (1979) by Mike M — 11 Nov 2008
The '70s really were a special time for low budget sci fi. Add Altman into the mix, and you've got low budget sci fi that just looks really freaking good (the snow shots alone must have looked amazing on a large screen).
None of Altman's trademark absurdism is present, although just one of those zoom shots should give away who was behind the camera. The omnipresent Vaseline on the lens in nearly every shot was distracting at first, but soon grew to be just another element in this world, almost as if to say the whole film's a cautionary dream.
I'm kind of surprised this doesn't have a larger cult following.
