Review of Quinceañera (2006) by Daniel R — 23 Jun 2007
So, let's try to explain the movie with more clichés than a Mexican soap opera. A 14 year old girl like any other brought up in a low-income Mexican-American home (1st cliché) is looking forward to what in this movie they call her "quinceaniera". This is no more than the latin version of her sweet 16 (only a year earlier). So, old cliché, girl has boyfriend, girl doesn?t have sex with the boyfriend, girl gets pregnant by immaculate conception. Dad gets mad at girl for thinking she doesn?t respect her Christian upbringing and kicks her out of the house to live with her uncle (more like granduncle). Had enough clichés? Well there?s more, there is also her cousin who is gay and therefore is also kicked out of his home, and were is he going to live? Yep, the same uncle? but wait, to make the story more interesting lets have a gay couple owning the land in which the uncle lives, and let?s have them have a Latin-boy-fetish you know trouble is sure to happen. And let?s have ?em all learn a valuable lesson in the end by the death of a relative (try to guess who).
But the clichés are not as bad as the acting, the cheesy music, the stereotypes or the fact that some of the other stories are not concluded and the fact that everything is ?solved? in the end? so if you have an interest in Mexican traditions, I?d recommend ANY other film. There?s nothing in this film to keep you interested.
PS. I did give it one star for the accuracy on the crap music they play at those celebrations (...good times).
