Review of Quinceañera (2006) by Sabrina I — 14 Nov 2010
This is one of those 'slice of life' films but it's not as good as a film like 'The Serect of the Grain' It's just doesn't seem as authentic as that film and it doesn't pull you into the characters lives well enough.
I was disappointed that the character of Carlos was not etched out properly..he seemed more interesting to me than the main character Magdalena. Also, I wish the film had concentrated more on the Mexican culture it was trying to represent but instead it veered off in a different direction however it seems like the filmmakers still weren't sure what the film wanted to be, so in the end.
.you are not sure what the message or the intent was. It's a watchable film, not boring just not anything to rave about. I really was confused by the parents reaction to their daughters pregnancy..
..they were angry at first but when they found out she didn't *ACTUALLY* have sex, they were like OH OKAY LOL...well umm, she still went pretty far! So, for them to just drop everything and accept her because of THAT made no sense considering how angry they were about it in the first place.
It just confused me....anyway, it's a good indie effort just not memorable. :).
