Review of Quills (2000) by Terra A — 25 Aug 2008
This film is fucked up and deranged, which is what makes it such an amazing film. I have a pretty sick sense of humor, but I also know this type of humor is offensive to many. Geoffrey Rush gives a standout performance as does Michael Caine.
Joaquin Phoenix also gives a good and moving performance, but I still think his performance Gladiator was stronger. Don't get me wrong though...Phoenix delivers a very strong performance, especially in the last quarter of the movie.
Director Philip Kaufman is in his element here and he gives us a film whose style is something thats unfortunately missing from movies these days. The dialogue is sharp and biting and I found myself holding onto every word that was spoken, especially when you're hearing one of Marquis de Sade's tales.
However, be warned: this film is not for everyone. Some may find it immoral, tasteless, and offensive, which is precisely why I enjoyed it so much. If you're looking for good performances, a good story, and great dialogue, I cannot recommend this highly enough.
