Not at all true to the historical Sade, or the sequence of events (Justine was published while he was imprisoned in the Bastille not at Charenton)...however Rush's version of Sade is lovable and his conversion of Joachin Phoenix's character (aside from the death of Kate Winslet) is straight out of a short story by Sade on a similar topic.
Fails to fully address the full weight of libertinage...read 120 Days of Sodom to get a more complete feel...it's not violent sex only...it's incest, pedophilia, and infanticide that Sade begins to really cross the line.
You can see this movie and love Sade, but to stomach the real thing, undilluted...is completely different and few people have the intestinal fortitude or completely organic nihilistic and atheistic nature to be able to empathize with it all.
As it is... the movie is a stunning and beautiful (although inaccurate) love story and attack on censorship. Well done.
