Review of Quills (2000) by Yalan Z — 03 Feb 2008
One of my favourite films ever, notwithstanding my Joaquin Phoenix obsession. I watched this when I was 14 (my parents almost killed me) and I am still very much enthralled by its in-your-face though not heavy-handed anti-censorship theme.
It has a brilliantly written screenplay and it's immensely well-acted. Geoffrey Rush is one amazing, AMAZING actor - he made the Marquis de Sade a sympathetic character with a passion for writing that is almost admirable in its unceasing irreverence and insatiable hunger to be fulfilled.
Joaquin and Kate Winslet were brilliant, BRILLIANT, and had great chemistry with each other. Above all else, Quills is a 'fuck you' to censors all over the world, and every single person who does not believe in, and tries to stifle, freedom of expression.
Its underlying motive and message spoke straight to my heart. Absolutely love it.
