Review of Quills (2000) by Earl H — 05 Aug 2009
Philip Kaufman extravaganza. First, I have a hard time buying that people would have found it "amusing" because it was so outrageous, the stuff is vile and 2) I can't believe that many peasants who worked cleaning the castle could read and/or write.
But Geoffrey Rush was beautifully cast as the Marquis de Sade and the rest of the cast is perfect, down to Billie Whitelaw as the laundresses mother who has gone blind from the chemicals used to bleach the sheets.
Surprised Michael Caine took on such an ugly part - not surprised he did it so well though. Wonderful, if depressing and over the time.
