Review of Quigley Down Under (1990) by Sharyn H — 02 Feb 2009
Admittedly, I watched this solely for Alan Rickman (and sadly was not as impressed as I thought I'd be.) I really didn't get into the movie much at all - it's just a western, complete with standard American western soundtrack, dropped into the Australian outback, and it just didn't work for me.
As an Australian, I suppose I looked at it as *just* being a transplant - other than the Indigenous folk who appearred in it (and the occasional actor, like Ben Mendelsohn), there really wasn't much that was "Australian" about it, so it felt disjointed and awkward to me.
I did love the part where San Giacomo's character encourages the baby's cries and sheer life, then takes on the dingoes - a great, if somewhat predictable, evolution of the character.
