Review of Quiet City (2007) by Frank P — 18 Jul 2008
I give another vote to support Quiet City as the best American movie of 2007, and one of the greatest films ever made. It's hardly imaginable that someone can achieve such tremendous visual beauty and complexity through simple equipment.
The comparison to Terrence Malick is not at all far-fetched, and frankly, I prefer Aaron Katz. He replicates the essence of living and human interaction few other filmmakers have managed to capture. I can think of only a handful, among them Manoel de Oliveira and Eric Rohmer.
Most importantly, Katz is so young! I really hope that when he gets the budget and equipment, he does not trade in his sense of beauty, economy, and imagination.
