Review of Quick Change (1990) by Matt B — 17 Aug 2010
No matter how many silly things the writers throw in, Bill Murray's hilarious performance and even better direction comes through shining. Quick Change is two different movies in one - a funny bank heist with some clever ideas, and then they get out and the writers had no clue how to keep the train on the tracks.
Bill Murray is the man. Everyone knows it, but he has some unfunny roles and movies just like anyone. His sense of humor is odd and sometimes we just don't get it. But, in Quick Change we get it, and it's very clever and funny.
Some of the writing in this film is preposterous, and some is smart. And because of that, the viewer will never see what's coming next. Saying that, most of the great writing comes within the first half hour. Especially how Murray and company get away from the bank with a million dollars. I think that was too smart for a comedy, and too smart for these dumb characters.
This isn't a film by any means that will be remembered, as we've been treated to far more better heist flicks, but it's oddball humor makes it a worth-while watch for all Murray fans alike.
