Review of Quest for Fire (1981) by Richard-Yves S — 06 Dec 2007
Props to Annaud. Excellent conceit, and though it contains some groaners (making nice with friendly mammoths???), well imagined. The 'Mud People' are plausible and well delineated. This is Perlman as you've pretty much always seen him (a big guy covered in prosthetics, and as usual, acting right through them), and Rae Dawn Chong steals the movie.
And no, it's not correct to say that there's no dialogue! Anthony Burgess actually devised languages for the various races encountered herein, and what sounds like grunts actually has a syntax!!! A fave.
