Review of Queen of the Damned (2002) by Remi L — 08 Aug 2009
Yes yes, Warner Bros butchered a literary classic, but like Twilight (which was also done badly) the fact that it is a movie adaptation of one of my favorite fictional series keeps it from being completely banished from my film library!
I applaud Anne Rice for casting a black woman as an Egyptian queen despite protests. Stuart Townsend embodied the Lestat of Vampire Lestat and the other sequels (while Tom Cruise embodied the Lestat of Interview With The Vampire). The director was going for modern, rock star style and feel and it THAT was a hit. Everything else was a bloody miss.
You cannot pack two thick novels into one 101 minute movie, completely tear asunder their individual plots and basically create your own story using someone else's characters (and without giving enough of a backdrop at that!) and being surprised that moviegoers were left confused and feeling out of the loop.
Yes the movie was done poorly, but I love Anne Rice's works and I will probably watch this movie a hundred times over just because Anne Rice's name is on it, lol.
