Review of Queen of the Damned (2002) by Alexander C — 07 Dec 2012
''There comes a time for every vampire when the idea of eternity becomes momentarily unbearable. Living in the shadows, feeding in the darkness with only your own company to keep, rots into a solitary, hollow existence. Immortality seems like a good idea, until you realize you're going to spend it alone. So I went to sleep, hoping that the sounds of the passing eras would fade out, and a sort of death might happen. But as I lay there, the world didn't sound like the place I had left, but something different.''.
Aaliyah: Queen Akasha.
Stuart Townsend: Lestat de Lioncourt.
The vampire Lestat becomes a rock star whose music invokes the queen of all vampires from slumber.
Being a fan of Vampire movies and knowing full well this is a sequel to Interview with a Vampire I must admit this felt 2nd class. The whole film was fun but no where near as magical.
Focuses more on Lestat than Akasha. Stuart Townsend has had the worst parts I've seen in films, this being the best one I have seen him in so far. Thankfully this film was better than the dire League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...
The acting was quite poor in places sadly.
Music wise it was cool with the whole rock -star angle and feels like a mix between.
Underworld, The crow and The Covenant.
Aaliyah, with her Queen character, on the other hand has a magical quality to her but I was annoyed that she wasn't given more to do in the film. I loved her role in Romeo must Die and its a shame she passed away so young.
Would have preferred a more negative ending and not such an unoriginal bland one. I mean all the vampire's at the end looked like they were 2D cut out dolls.
On the whole though it does have some good ideas but sometimes sadly it felt like an episode of Supernatural or Buffy rather than a movie.
