Review of Queen of Katwe (2016) by Umesh P — 07 Oct 2016
It is an inspirational a story of girl who became international level chess champion at very young of age of fourteen. Movie proves that mentorship and good teacher can change lives of children. Her coach was struggling to find a good job.
He sacrificed his life to showcase talent of poor children in village. He found a talent in a girl and dedicated himself to make children realize their dream. He took children to chess university level, national level championships.
The girl Fiona is living in a homeless family of mother and her three kids. Family survived over road, moved around village with their baggage. Movie ironically tells that even after wining national level medals, there is no change in their lifestyle and financial situation.
Nobody can eat medals and survive. Fiona's sister had turned prostitute to come out of poverty. Family didn't have money for food and shelter. But this young girl had taken challenged to find better place upon this earth.
Girl sharpened her skills by working over nights in light of candle. Movie end when Fiona bought house for her family with sum of money she gained through chess championships. Most recommended movie for even children.
Laudable job by Mira Nair for this story of hope, and strong belief. It made me believe one can turn the life upside down wherever you might be at current moment.
