Review of Queen of Katwe (2016) by John C — 11 Oct 2016
This movie illustrates the profound impact of having a mentor that truly cares and is willing to make the sacrifices required to help a group of kids living in extreme conditions. Phiona would have probably been doomed to a life like her mother's (even though her mother was strong and worked hard to provide for her children) if she had stayed on the path she seemed to be taking.
However, when she met Robert and learned to play chess, a whole new world opened up for her and eventually for her family. Definitely a "feel-good" movie after all the rough patches are smoothed out (kind of like the typical timeline of a movie on the Hallmark channel).
