Review of Queen of Katwe (2016) by Peter P — 23 Dec 2016
12/23/16.
This is a moving story based on a true story. It does a wonderful job of giving the viewer the feel of the abject poverty in the slum as well as the color and rhythm of the people who struggle daily to just survive. It even manages to make chess a tense, thrilling game even though I never played it and certainly don't know it's strategy. You can't help but root for Phiona and all the kids from the ministry. Coach is a strong and steady influence and her mother is the pillar of strength and morality. I especially enjoyed the ending of the film where they brought out the actual people standing next to the actor who played them, along with the what are they doing now update. This movie is in Disney's wheelhouse and they don't miss.
