Review of Quatermass and the Pit (1967) by Kenny H — 17 Apr 2009
An exciting sci-fi thriller with the best Dr. Quatermass yet, Andrew Keir (also a great performance by Julian Glover, who would later be the man who "chose poorly" in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). I find myself largely at a loss to describe how much fun this movie is - largely because the previous Quatermass film is equally entertainigly but so tonally different. This is a series I'd love to see rebooted, if the proper talent were behind the camera.
I won't try to justify this one - just enjoy it.
Interesting note: John Carpenter is a huge Quatermass fan, going so far as to use John Quatermass as an alias for the editor of his early work. He also unsuccessfully worked elements of the plot of this picture into Ghosts of Mars.
Though, in In The Mouth of Madness, the town with many secrets is Hobb's End - the same name as the subway station The Pit.
