Review of Quartet (2012) by Paula R — 01 Apr 2013
Quartet.
What a charming and entertaining movie. My husband and I went with another couple, and we both loved it. Dustin Hoffman should be proud of his first directorial effort.
The plot was well thought out -- light but not too sweet. The residents of a retirement home for British entertainers are worried about their home being closed. They are in the throes of preparing for their annual fund raiser in the form of a show/review that provides them with the funding that keeps their beautiful estate open. In the meantime, a NEW, FAMOUS resident arrives with great excitement -- both good and not so good. I don't want to tell you too much more for fear of giving the whole plot away, and ruining the movie for you.
It also helps that the actors were tremendous. Billy Connolly was a hoot; Maggie Smith was tremendous as always, and Tom Courtenay was masterful.
I truly felt that I was a "guest" at the retirement home for British entertainers. I just sat back in the theater and watched as if I was right there. Please see this Indie movie if you are interested in this genre.
