I think this adds more to the series than people give it credit for - a new powerful villian (that's actually infiltrated MI6, unlike SPECTRE). A bit more realism for the politics involved (CIA being in bed with some seriously shady people).
And Bond is still Bond, if with a bit more depth. Sleep with the ladies? Ends up getting them killed and is CALLED on it by M!
