Review of Quantum of Solace (2008) by Mick T — 11 Feb 2013
After CASINO ROYALE, there was nowhere to go but down, and while QUANTUM is an odd duck of a Bond film, it's also very original and moves like a fired bullet. Reason #1? Daniel Craig. The screenwriters went to another galaxy here, yet keep things grounded a bit more with reality, with a story as cold as steel: the series tropes are there, but they are as black as oil.
Complain all you want about the action scenes, but you have to give the production credit for taking a tremendous amount of risks here, with an unusual Bond girl (who's surprisingly physical and independent), and even more unusual villain (the final showdown between him and Bond is one of a kind).
Flaws and all, this film is still a solid entry in the series; it's just entirely different and doesn't have a trace of old-school 007: aside from a black homage to GOLDFINGER, which is quite effective.
