Review of Quantum of Solace (2008) by Joseph M — 17 Feb 2013
Well, second parts are never ever good after all...... And this one marks the spot!
As a famous proverb Klingon will say: "Vengeance is better serve on cold dish", this one delivers exactly as it refers..... Or it tries a little.....
Anyway, Quantum of Solace, an original script that follows 10 minutes after the climax of Casino Royale, tells the story of Bond trying to find out who were responsible of Vesper's treason and the mystery organization who is financing terrorism around the world. While it has a nice opening with the chasing cars around Italy, down the road, goes all bad......
Still without the classic opening gun barrel, Moneypenny or Q and his famous gadgets, Bond tries really hard to deliver his efficiency of finding responsible in anyway he can. Even means disturbing a public reunion during a opera night or signing a treaty for water supply, 007 doesn't fail or stop to hesitate of what he is doing, he just do the job because it feels good and the same time eliminates possibilities of future terrorism around the world. And that is where everything good ends there....
The action sequences are justify but too much cut and shaky cam, feels you are watching a Bourne movie by Greengrass than Forster who direct this one..... It really miss the mark of what the classic Casino Royale bring to all of us...... And you can count that with the Bond girls. Even they look exquisitive and delicacy in the way they look and act, they are useless and pointless to the story. Is like they where not necessary for the plot to move on. But you can deny it is one of the first Bond movies, where Bond doesnt takes the main female character to bed after saving her from danger.
Consequently we can mention, that even you have seen the strong of villains like Dr. No, Goldfinger, Emilio Largo, Blofeld, Stromberg, Trevelyan and others..... This one is a really poor written bad guy. Don't get me wrong, Almaric is a good actor and his performances are rarely criticize at all, but this time he miss the point of what really has to be a Bond villain. Not only he is coward but he doesn't look like someone will take him seriously as a madman at all.
Nevertheless, even QOS deals with treason, mystery, vengeance, rebellion and forgiveness, something we have seen before in Licence to Kill and Die Another Day, this one doesn't really work. Is too ambiguous of what Bond is doing and if he or not working after all for the MI 6 to complete the mission.......
Not recommendable at all, and a complete letdown of those who were loyal and fans to Casino Royale.....
