After numerous viewings I have come to the conclusion that Quantum of Solace is one of the most misunderstood films in the Bond franchise, but it is also the most complex and profound. Admittedly, it lacks many of the elements that make Bond films inherently Bond films; it isn't a stand-alone story, it's the first Bond that doesn't open with a gun barrel sequence, the villain doesn't have a facial scar, the Bond girl isn't there just for the sake of being there, and for the first time ever Bond doesn't say his name. And yet, what lies is an incredibly complex film that turns the tables on the concept of the spy agency, it blurs the lines between good and evil (often through Bond himself) and it is also the first in the Bond franchise to truly address modern social issues.

Considering the film was largely being written (by the hands of the director Marc Forster and Daniel Craig himself) as it was being shot, having fallen victim to the writers' strike, the final product is inspiring. There are some scenes that incredibly well conceived and very unique. The fight sequences are brutal and raw (evoking memories of the Bourne films). The emotional arc of the film is entirely about Bond seeking revenge for the death of Vesper in Casino Royale, although we never see a glimpse of her in the entire film. This arc is supported by the backstory of the Bond girl Camille. Finally, Bond is humanized in the most elaborate and ingenious way through his search for solace that comes together brilliantly in the very last scene of the film.

The film's downfall is it's editing. The film moves too fast for its own good, being almost incomprehensible in the first viewing. This is likely why the general consensus has immense hatred for this film. But a patient viewer, through numerous viewings and several rewinding of key scenes, will understand that Quantum of Solace is inseparable from Casino Royale. They are, ultimately, two parts of the same story. Neither makes sense without the other.

The performances are great, Craig is a superb Bond. David Arnold's score is versatile and often uniquely exotic. Ultimately, Quantum of Solace is gravely misunderstood - and for good reason, nevertheless - but it is also far more complex and profound than any other Bond film.
