Review of Pushing Tin (1999) by Henrik H — 29 Dec 2009
Well this is a strange one. It's a VERY unpredictable and strange story about a man working in air traffic control, who loses his 'touch' (meaning he's a supreme air traffic controller) when he gets caught cheating his own wife with his co-worker's wife.
Well, the story seems to never end. Just when you think that "hey, this is the stereotypical ending" the movie just goes on and on and on. This is not a bad thing, but it's kinda annoying. I don't blame this movie, I blame all the other movies too being too predictable and pessimistic.
Billy Bob Thornton is the shit. He looks like he's the embodiment of "fuck you" and "I'm GONNA fuck you" at the same time. In the meantime, John Cusack is too much himself. He's taken a role of being this "look at me, I'm an ugly nerd and really good at something, but then I lose my innerself/my feng shui/my whatever and I turn out to be a friggin loser but then I find myself/love/my talent once again and I prosper after all". He's good at it, but if you've seen "High Fidelity" or "Grosse Pointe Blank", this is the goddamn same role again from him.
I hate Angelina Jolie in this one. She's kinda sexy nowadays, not a bad actress either, but in 90's she was always this damn gothic/messed up rocker girl who was just slipping nipples and giving constant shit to someone and acting weird in order just to appear in movies. This is not an exception. Her role is just irritating. It's not deep, it's lightly-written, it's just plain dull.
I'm not gonna rate every actor in the movie and I'm just gonna say Cate Blanchett redeems herself again. And I've not seen a bad movie by her. Tell me if you have.
I'm giving this movie three stars, because it's entertaining, it's something "new" and it's kinda funny every now and then. It's not a movie you can enjoy time after time, though. Okay, there's nothing "hidden" in the movie, so if you see it once, you've just seen it all the times you really need.
