Review of Pusher (1996) by C L — 15 Sep 2011
I'm watching through all of Winding Refn's films. This is the first of his definitive Danish crime trilogy.
It's a really good, very realistic and rather engaging gangster/drug film. The characters are all well drawn. I love the way everyone is friendly as hell with him (everyone including the cops always offers him coffee, like it's a basic human right, and the way he chats with the henchman about getting out of crime and becoming a kebab chef) until that line is crossed, then they're willing to do all and anything to him.
Drasbaek looks like Lizzy Caplan a bit to me (though not as pretty). Mikkelsen wan't in it anywhere near as much as I expected him to be (I expected him to be the star of this). I presume he has a larger role in the next two, which I'm looking forward to.
