Review of Push (2009) by Jasonc — 20 May 2009
As a long-time fan of superhero movies, I can say that this was the best one I've seen in a LONG time. The special effects/special abilities of the characters are used sparingly, and some of the best "powered" scenes are ones that use no special effects of all--resulting in a subtlety severely lacking in larger budget movies like X2.
That said, there are plenty of effects-heavy scenes to satisfy the viewer craving eye-candy. But these scenes still juxtapose the iridescent shimmer of a telekinetic shield with the garbage and detritus of a Hong Kong construction site, creating an interplay of science fiction elements with the grungy reality.
Carefully read through the critics' reviews on this movie regarding the plot. Among the negative reviewers, you'll find two camps--ones that found the plot "too convoluted" and ones that found that it "didn't make sense.
" Feel free to read that as "don't like to think while watching movies" and "didn't bother thinking while watching." The plot is intense, and as much of a puzzle for the viewer to solve as it is a life or death race for the characters to survive.
The last fourth of the movie where the protagonist lays out his plan has an almost Ocean's Eleven feel to it, occluding the true nature of his plans from his teammates and the audience, forcing the viewer to attempt to guess at his final solution even as the plot unfolds.
