Review of Purple Rain (1984) by Louis D — 11 Nov 2009
Purple Rain proves a difficult film to rate. If not for Prince, this movie can be abhorred on almost all accounts for its lazy cinematography, and terrible acting (including Prince and Morris Day). Due to Prince's musical inclusion, however, the film regains a sense of legitimacy and likability, allowing the spectator to interpret flaws as charming glimmers of irony.
Should a film reliant on the inclusion of a pop star and thirty minutes of outstanding musical performances excuse itself from caring about its other cinematic elements? The answer is no. See 8 Mile for details.
