Review of Purple Rain (1984) by Susan H — 17 Oct 2010
"Dearly beloved... we are gathered here today to get through this thing called LIFE...".
A singer in an underground rockband strives to become the greatest, dealing with competition, relationship issues, and his parents' abusive behavoir towards another.
This movie is fairly decent. The storyline is rather generic concidering as part of the music genre but makes up for it in a powerful cast which makes it work. Prince surprisingly is a decent actor but it feels like he is the Micheal Jackson of 80s rock n roll ("HEE-HEE"s included).
Each performance by the singers are pretty cool. The songs are great... even the one about meeting the girl named Nikki (whom the singer met at the hotel lobby "playing" with a magazine).
But like it said it was pretty much a generic storyline that was pulled off by a great cast. You can't really go very deep into it unless your talking about the songs over the movie but that's pretty much why your watching it.
Worth a look if you see it on TV.
