Review of Purple Rain (1984) by Willow Y — 02 Jan 2011
On any given day, I like to refer to this film as being my favourite of all time. Yes I am a Prince fan, in case you are wondering. I recently decided to show this film to a friend who had never seen it and once again I enjoyed its pure awesomeness.
In reality it really does need to be broken up into two categories. There is about 40 minutes of "live" performances of Prince's (and others) songs throughout so it does play like a series of video clips.
Then the rest of it is Prince posturing, riding his motorbike, dealing with his erratic parents or loving up (and down) all over Apollonia. The acting here isnt fantastic but it really doesnt matter, its all about the music, the clothes and the overall coolness on offer.
There are some flaws, the soft approach it takes with domestic violence is the most glaring. Forgetting that though, you do see Apollonia's rack, which is impressive. Really, its a classic and can be enjoyed or enjoyed ironically - you decide.
