Review of Punisher: War Zone (2008) by Zachary P — 04 Apr 2010
You know you are in trouble when you have Newman as a sidekick.
The Punisher features a protagonist who doesn't utter a word until 30 minutes into the film. In fact he may only have a page of dialogue in the film. It was great to see McNulty in action and his Jigsaw did look great. However any menace of this Frakensteins Monster was let down with the tone in which he played the character. It was as if the bore of The Punisher was offset by someone trying so hard to provide comedic relief.
The dialogue throughout the film is laid on so thick it is unbearable. It is also shot nicely, which is strange for a film with little mainstream appeal.
Parts of the film are ridiculous. It is mentioned that Jigsaws bone structure has been destroyed. I think not. The Mafia seem to be a parody of their sinister selves, and hardly frightening at all. The psychotic brother is also ill-conceived in his entirety. As for the acting, well, no overacting is required when vomit is involved!
