Review of Puncture (2011) by Connor _ — 13 Jan 2012
An incredibly underrated story about a drug-addicted lawyer taking on a Goliath health supplies company. Leading actor Chris Evans is one who always tries for the unique roles. He's been cast in a couple popcorn flicks and it's cear he always regrets it as he loves doing films like Puncture and Sunshine and Push, films that are cool and refreshing and original and not mainstream.
So he's always an actor I trust to do good movies, and this is not exception. In fact it's one of the best films I've ever seen, at the top of its genre. Exceptionally cast with unheardof character actors who make the film flow beautifully from script to actor to screen (which also has excellent cinematography).
Evans knows his character inside out and lives his character's life from the first second of the film to the last, making an ideal Mike Weiss. Brett Cullen makes an amazing but subtle antagonist who has taken advantage of siding with the winners.
Cullen's adaptation into his character makes him vanish into the part as if he too studied at law school. Evans character is atypical of a lawyer, and maybe that's really how the real Mike Weiss was, but he nonetheless is a superbly written and acted character and there couldn't have been a better actor cast.
Michael Biehn and Jesse L. Martin play smaller roles but roles that are so well portrayed and written that it makes every sparce moment they're on screen special. Also kudos to director and co-star Mark Kassen for pulling off two of the biggest jobs in filmmaking and mastering them both.
A+.
