Review of Puncture (2011) by David G — 12 Dec 2012
Although Puncture isn't the true courtroom drama I was hoping for (they seem to be a dying breed these days), it's still an engaging and rewarding flick, brought to life by some fantastic performances. The story is based on a real life case and follows two small-time, ambulance-chasing lawyers (Chris Evans and Mark Kassen) who find themselves up against the almost limitless might and resources of the US Healthcare System as they fight to expose a conspiracy. Their client has invented a new type of safety syringe that eliminates the risk of doctors and nurses being accidentally stuck with contaminated needles, yet not one hospital will touch it. Why are they so afraid of something that will save hundreds, if not thousands of lives?
It's a fascinating story, made all the more interesting by the characters, Chris Evans' drug-addicted lawyer Mike Weiss being the prime example - a gifted but damaged individual who despite his personal demons is almost obsessively determined to see the case through to the end. Evans is terrific and it's great to see him prove once again that he's more than just a set of muscles in a stupid spandex suit.
More like this please.
P.S. Is it just me or does Mark Kassen look alarmingly like a 40-year-old Michael Cera?
